CORD demands prior talks, insists protests still on

Updated Saturday, June 11th 2016 at 00:00 GMT +3The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) will continue its anti-IEBC demonstrations next week unless the government picks two representatives for pre-dialogue talks.
Yesterday, the CORD leadership said it is waiting for Jubilee to respond to their request to have two of their representatives meet those from the opposition to settle on modalities before they (CORD) can make public its list of negotiators.
The leadership also challenged Jubilee negotiators to thrash out grey areas before they embark on the proposed Parliamentary route.
CORD leader Raila Odinga said they will hold their anti-IEBC demonstrations on Monday and Thursday as planned, unless Jubilee names its two nominees to meet those from the opposition.
"Unless we define a pathway for structured deliberations on the necessary reforms to the commission, the programme for Monday and Thursday anti-IEBC protests still stand," Raila said in a statement read on his behalf by Siaya Senator James Orengo.
CORD will be represented by Orengo and Tongaren MP Esseli Simiyu.
Status quo
The former Prime Minister took issue with the conflicting positions taken by the President, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on CORD demonstrations.
"The President, Nkaissery and Boinnet must resolve their internal conflicts regarding the demonstrations. We are keen to ensure peace prevails during our demonstrations," he said.
Speaking at Raila's Capitol Hill offices in Nairobi yesterday, CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang'ula said they will only call off the protests when dialogue over IEBC begins.
"The status quo remains. We must first see commitment on the part of Jubilee on all issues raised. We will not relent until we see actual 'ray of hope'," said Wetang'ula.
Kalonzo accused the government of not being sincere with the negotiations. "There is lack of good will on the part of Jubilee. We must talk in good faith," he said.
He also dismissed claims that the Wiper Party may be shortchanged at the negotiation table, saying he proposed Orengo and Esseli to represent CORD.
