{UAH} 10 roadside market vendors killed in Ntungamo accident Written by URN
Up to ten people have been confirmed dead and four others injured in an accident at Rwahi trading centre in Kayonza sub-county in Ntungamo district this afternoon.
The accident involved a lorry; registration number UAV 415V which lost control and swerved off the road killing roadside market vendors. Three of the dead are from the same family.
Some of the dead have been identified as Allen Muheise, Peace Muhabwa, Justine Muhabwa and Allen Byanagwa among others. An eyewitness, Mashata Frank said that the lorry was moving at very high speed. He says the lorry driver attempted to jump out of the irrepressible truck upon sensing danger but failed.
"What I witnessed with my own eyes; is this guy was over speeding the driver of the truck, so he failed to [brake]. Fortunately he realised there was a truck in front of him. He was likely to knock my truck. As he approached my truck there were some people who were offloading matooke (bananas) and others were loading onions…I tried to dodge him. I called my clients if matooke to run away from the roadside - they just took off where the vehicle was moving. That is where the accident [happened]. The road is good only that drivers over speed.
Fred Akiza, the officer in charge of the traffic police department at Rubare police station said that the spot is prone to fatal accidents. He said that the driver of the lorry has been arrested.
The dead were transported to Itoojo hospital mortuary while the injured are at Kabale referral hospital. On January 8, an accident involving Kibungo coach registration number UAM 804U traveling from Kabale to Kampala rammed into a trailer registration number T 00220A/C 49809A at the same spot killing nine people and injuring 25 others.
