Fears abound Uganda as rebel group revives
From GERALD BUSINGE in Kampala, Uganda
KAMPALA, (CAJ News) – SUDAN'S reported support for Uganda's rebel group, Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), has rekindled fears the group could perpetrate atrocities similar to the spree that has claimed more than 100 000 lives over the years.
The insurgency in the central African country displaced about 2 million while scores were raped, mutilated or abducted during the crisis that has spanned 30 years but had subsided in recent times after international military intervention.
However, it has emerged LRA, led by the exiled Joseph Kony, is undergoing a revival through support from Sudan, which is reportedly backing the rebel group in protest to rival Uganda supporting South Sudan.
South Sudan is in dispute with Sudan, from which it gained independence in 2011.
Experts have called on the African Union to beef up the Regional Task Force (RTF) to thwart the revival of the LRA, which at its peak between 1987 and 2006, the LRA had about 20 000 fighters.
"That could just prove to be the decisive factor in ending one of Africa's longest-running and almost-forgotten conflicts," said Peter Fabricius, a consultant with the Institute for Security Studies
