The army yesterday said it was still investigating the Garrison commander of the Entebbe airbase who was released on bond on Tuesday after spending three weeks in military confinement for alleged subversion.

Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, the army spokesperson, told Daily Monitor that Col Dan Opito was still under intelligence surveillance for subversive activities.

"He will be reporting to military police every Friday because UPDF is still investigating him," he said.

The former 4th Division infantry Operations and training officer was arrested three weeks ago by a combined team of Special Forces and police.

His arrest was linked to the other 30 soldiers including officers at different ranks, who have also been arrested for subversion.

Land Forces Spokesperson, Maj Stanley Malisaba, has come out to deny that most of the arrested officers were managing armoury at Bombo, the headquarters of Land Forces. The soliders were arrested following a daring attack on Gulu Central Police Station.

A UPDF officer and a police commander were killed in the attack. Several arrests were made in Gulu a day later. Nakawa Member of Parliament.

Michael Kabaziguruka, who was last week charged in the Court Martial with treason, has also been interrogated and questioned about subversive activities that security agencies are linking to former FDC party presidential candidate Kizza Besigye and ex-spymaster, Gen David Sejusa.

But Gen Sejusa has since denied and dismissed these allegations. Dr Besigye, charged with treason, is currently on remand at Luzira prison. The Constitutional Court in 2006 dismissed a similar charge against him, saying his trial in a military court for allegedly heading the shadowy People's Redemption Army or PRA, was unconstitutional.
Dozens of his supporters incarcerated on similar offences were later granted amnesty in exchange for incriminating Dr Besigye while those that declined remained in prison, with the last PRA suspect released this year.
