Mother of Chris Stevens shreds Donald Trump for exploiting his death during convention
Donald Trump often uses the deaths of four Americans during the Benghazi attacks for political gain, but one victim's family member is not happy.
Over the last four years, one of the biggest attack points for Republicans to use against Hillary Clinton and the Democrats has been the terrorist attack in Benghazi in 2012. After Republicans used Benghazi victims' families to highlight the issue at their convention last week, others have decided to speak out.
Benghazi backlash
The Republican National Convention was all the rage this past week, as it provided constant controversy during each night of the week-long event. From Melania Trump being accused of plagiarizing her speech, to members of the media fighting in a hallway, to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz refusing to endorse Donald Trump for the GOP nomination, it was Patricia Smith's speech that received almost as much attention. Smith lost her son, Sean Smith, during the Benghazi attacks, and blamed his death on Clinton. However, as reported by The Hill on July 23, the mother of former U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, had a different take on the issue.
Writing in The New York Times in a letter to the editor, Mary Commanday voiced her anger at Trump and Republicans for using the deaths of the four Americans killed Benghazi, including her son, for political gain. "As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens's mother," Commanday begun, stating that she was objecting "to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican Party." Continuing, Commanday referred to the exploitation of the victims by Trump and the GOP as "opportunistic" and "cynical."
Election outlook
The issue of Benghazi, as well as Clinton's controversial use of a private email server while running the State Department, continues to result in pure partisan politics. Democrats are likely to write-off the attack as a "witch hunt," while Republicans push the issue as a serious lack of credibility for Clinton.
In the most recent round of polling, the race is tight, with Clinton holding on to a slim lead of just under five points on a national level. Where Clinton has the edge is with minority voters, as 70 percent of Hispanics and women view the former host of "The Apprentice" in a negative light
