Uganda: Government Completes Renovation of Abim Hospital
By Steven Ariong
Abim — Government has finally completed the renovation of Abim Referral hospital in Abim district, Karamoja sub region in north eastern Uganda.
The major renovation of the hospital done by Pal Globe Engineering limited at the cost of shs 700million was after the controversial visit to the hospital by the former Forum Democratic Change Party Presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
While campaigning in the sub region last December, Dr. Besigye made an impromptu visit to the referral hospital which had not received a facelift since it was built in the 1960s.
The hospital was also operating without a residential doctor for nearly three years.
The rot in the hospital was widely covered in the media and three nurses who talked to Dr Besigye about the rundown of the hospital nearly lost their jobs.
They were reprimanded by government for taking the FDC candidate around the hospital and exposing the despicable state of the health facility.
Just a month after Besigye's visit, government released shs 700million for the renovation of the hospital.
The facility has gone through a major renovation including, rebuilding and painting the hospital walls, building concrete sits for patients, opening sewerage system, installing water system, connecting electricity in the hospital, fixing ceilings in the whole hospital.
The acting hospital medical superintendent, Sister Mary Immaculate Acheng said the renovation of the hospital has attracted back patients who had shunned getting treatment in the facility.
"We are very happy with the government and also the contractor for the good work, the staff are also morally motivated now," she said.
Mr. Godfrey Ocen, a senior clinical officer at the hospital said the facility is now overwhelmed by the number of patients.
He said on a daily basis the hospital registers 200 to 300 patients in out-patients department.
The resident district commissioner Abim Mr. Hashaka Impimza however said the renovation of the hospital was because of the Besigye visit. "It was government plan."
He said additional shs 400million has been allocated to the district by ministry of finance to help hospital do renovation of other parts like Mortuary and TB wards.
