{UAH} The "dark days" of Milton Obote in the 1960s.

BY Timothy Kalyegira

'A 100 shilling bank note from 1966 issued by Uganda's central bank, Bank of Uganda. Bank of Uganda turned exactly 50 years today, Tuesday Aug. 16, 2016. It formally came into existence on Aug. 16, 1966.

On the note at left is the Balearic Crane, Uganda's official national bird while at lower right is a tea plantation.

The two signatures on the note are at left, that of the first Governor of Bank of Uganda the late Joseph Mubiru, and at right the Secretary of the Board of Bank of Uganda Robert Elangot.

During both Milton Obote governments, Bank of Uganda was headed by a Muganda (Joseph Mubiru, 1966-1971; Leo Kibirango, 1981-1987) and during both periods the Secretary to the Board was Robert Elangot.

This one hundred shilling note from 1966 would buy goods for the equivalent value in Aug. 2016 of about 250,000 shillings, when adjusted for inflation.

In 1968 the lowest paid government employees (drivers, office messengers, tea girls, storekeepers) earned 200 shillings per month, which in today's money, adjusted for inflation, is about 500,000 shillings.

University graduates on joining the civil service and cadet officers on joining the army at the rank of Second Lieutenant and the equivalent rank in the police earned a starting salary of 1,500 shillings in 1968, equivalent to 3.5 million shillings in 2016.
