In yet another diplomatic blow to former First Vice President Dr Riek Machar, the Chairman of the South Sudan Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) has promised to work with President Salva Kiir and his new First Vice President Gen Taban Deng to realise peace and stability in the youngest nation in the world.

Festus Mogae made the remarks on Saturday after meeting Kiir and Taban at the presidential palace in Juba.

The former Botswana president is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the implementation of the Agreement and the mandate and tasks of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU), including the adherence of the Parties to the agreed timelines and implementationschedule.

He also oversees the work of the Monitoring and VerificationMechanism (and its successor mechanism, the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism), the Economic and Financial Management Authority (EFMA), the Strategic Defence and Security Review Board (SDSRB), the National Elections Commission (NEC), and all other transitional institutions and mechanisms created by this Agreement and established as part of the TGoNU.

"I will seek guidance from government for smooth implementation of the peace deal signed last August," Mogae noted, adding, JMEC will continue seeking advice from stakeholders and make appropriate recommendations.

He further called for the deployment of regional troop to consolidate peace and rally citizens to reunite against the backdrop of a destructive civil war.

That Mogae is expressing willingness to work with Kiir and Deng is seen a major diplomatic triumph for Juba as it seeks to isolate Riek Machar.

Machar left Juba in the wake of the July battle at the presidential palace in which 300 soldiers died.

He would later be rescued by United Nations before being flown to Khartoum for specialized treatment.

ChimpReports understands Machar has since called for his reinstatement as First Vice President of South Sudan, a proposal rejected by Kiir.

Gen Taban, who is seen as a moderate opposition figure, has since pledged to facilitate the reintegration of resistance forces in the mainstream army and work closely with Kiir for South Sudan's stability.

Deng has since received a red-carpettreatment in Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan.‎
