{UAH} Reasons suggested for Amin's expulsion of the Asians in 1973
Reasons suggested for Amin's expulsion of the Asians in 1973
(1) that it goes back to the colonial era and colonial precepts who created colour bar in the economy, putting whites first, Asians second, and Africans third. Case in point: processing went to the whites (and that abroad), import, export and marketing dominated by Asians, and African engaged in production only.
(2) that Idi Amin wanted to have an affair with or marry an Indian girl who refused him and that Amin was being vindictive, picking on Asian's exclusivism: Asian men had affairs with "our" women, but would not allow an African to have an affair with "their" women.
(3 On Gaddafi's advice and in support of the PLO, Amin had broken up relationship with Britain, the expulsion of Asians, many of whom held British passports, was meant as hit back again Britain. Reason for Amin's anger was that the British government was pressing for his replacement.
(4) it was a populist move (just like the return of the Kabaka's body for burial) to win the hearts and minds of the ordinary people and to reward soldiers for their support for the coup.
