Research reveals most East African youths have favourable attitude to corruption
Out of the 146 million East Africans, an estimated 80 percent translating into 117 million are young people below the age of 35.
An East African Youth survey conducted by the East African institute of the Aga Khan Development Network has revealed that many young people below the age of 35 condone bribery and corruption.
According to the research findings, up to 58% of the young people in Uganda, Kenya,and Tanzania believe that it does not matter how one makes money as long as he or she does not end up in jail.
The findings were tabled by, Dr Alex Awiti, the Director of East African institute of the Aga khan Development network, to the regional assembly in Arusha Tanzania.The research was conducted amongst 7,010 youth in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania in 2014 and 2015.
Out of the 146 million East Africans, an estimated 80 percent translating into 117 million are young people below the age of 35.
Dr. Awiti believes the mindset of young people who prefer to vote for a candidate who has offered a bribe should be transformed.The research also reveals that Kenyans and Rwandans are more nationalistic than their counterparts in the region. Only 5% of the respondents say they feel they are East Africans.
