{UAH} U.S. Sponsored Low-Intensity Conflict in the Philippines
Robert Atuhairwe,
The works below are for anyone who wants to know why Filipino Communists have been engaged in brutal armed conflict since the end of the Second World. The first book, Philippine Society and Revolution, by Professor Jose Maria Sison, is the bible of Filipino communism and is considered one of the greatest works of Marxism-Leninism of the 20th century.
The second is an article Issued in 1987 after I had just arrived in the country, it was one of the instructive manuals for teaching all communist party cadres. It gives a very moving history of the Philippines and the struggles they have waged, in wave after wave, since they were first colonised by the Spanish Kingdom two centuries ago. It is an attempt by an academic, Dr Walden Bello, to understand why Filipino peasants have stood up against both foreign invaders and their local feudal land-lord supporters, and despite heavy sacrifices and hundreds of thousands of deaths in the process, still will not give up their struggle for national self-determination.
Dr Walden Bello examines the organic link between Filipino communists and the peasants and tries to explain the phenomenon of middle class intellectuals and students joining forces with organised peasants to form one of the most powerful social forces the world has ever known. He asks the question, why have Filipino intellectuals been able to forge such strong links with peasant communities where their counterparts elsewhere in Asia, Africa and Latin America have failed?
Professor Sison's work, Philippine Society and Revolution, on the other hand is worth reading and I would make it instructive reading for any one who wants to start an armed resistance against the fascist Rwandan occupier regime led by the fascist imperialist lackey Kayibanda Museveni in Uganda.
