Ugandans have taken to social media to trash a decision by Members of Parliament to award themselves shs68m in burial expenses. Parliament plans to spend Shs67.7m on burial expenses for each MP who dies. Perusal of the Parliament budget shows that Parliament has budgeted for an estimated five deaths this year, making a total of Shs338,680,000 planned expenses on burial of MPs. Last week, Parliament invited bids to identify service providers who are interested in offering funeral services to the national assembly.
A breakdown of expenditure of the Shs67.7m for a dead MP includes buying a state-of-the-art casket rated as American Casket at Shs6m, Shs5.5m for the grave, Shs4.5m for Order of Service books, Shs15m on feeding mourners and Shs17.5m on allowances for police. Ugandans whose taxes are funder of this project have treated this development with skepticism and bitterness.
While others would like to seek clarification on the MPs that subscribe to the Islamic faith asking whether they will also partake of the Shs6m coffin.
Another percentage on Facebook have asked MPs to plan for sickness and treatment and not death. They claim the MPs could have lost faith in the hospitals.
We bring you both sides of the discussion:
TAX PAYERS
Michael Kabuna: Yes, that's done, what about the cost of their weddings and marrying wives and husbands? This should be done quickly before others are thrown out! What an active Parliament this is! Whoever has eyes and ears at least can appreciate their efforts.
Vivian Cathie: When it comes these money issues, can't even hear of opposition members, they all become one, this Parliament is a loss, everything is about themselves... Me I foresaw this,,,they sweet talk voters & then forget all about them once they go thru,,,,at least I didn't waste my time voting any of those fools
Musobya Geofrey: Oh God I don't wish any death to happen because this too much of our money. May you Lord change the mindset of our leaders in Uganda, they are so greedy that every opinion they bring is all about how they can live exorbitant.
Anthony Onzima Adkinz Ryan: But even if the cost is 1 billion, no one .can decide to die soon. So why can't their salary percentage be saved for by trial cost when they die . Since they don't pay taxes. Nssf should start saving for their by trial costs. I think one day voters will realise the irrelevance of Mps and quit voting. We have unpredictable weather but none of Mps can talk of irrigation.
Turyahebwa Brazil: A demon must have been planted in that parliament .How do u start planning for your burial budget and ignore your treatment budget which would stop u from dying . If that budget would be channeled to health sector death rate would also come down.
Daniel Pikeri: Lately I get sick reading anything about MPs. Many know they won't make it back so every chance to make Money they jump at it. Soon we shall start paying for their house girls, shamba boys, side dishes and clothes took. Rotten politician
Nganda Harry: Thanks for the job you do but all this expenditure isn't necessary because it won't make any one resurrect also mind about those you've left behind carrying on life, I think it's high time you thought a about life insurance, the rest be complimented by mourners condolences. What about the future of our children you mean you want to go with everything!!?
