A girl aged just EIGHT has reportedly been arrested for being a LESBIAN.

The Ugandan girl was detained for allegedly having romantic relationships with other girls, some her own age.

Writing for The Monitor, author Denis Edema reports the Jinja Police Child Family Protection Unit is now investigating the case in Uganda where officials say homosexuality is illegal.

Catherine Wobuyaga, the officer in charge, said the minor is now in police custody.

She has apparently confessed to police that she has been "involved" with fellow girls, most of whom are her classmates, reports The Monitor.

The newspaper said the police claim the incidents happened in school toilets and other isolated places near her home.

Ms Wobuyaga said the girl, who cannot be named, was reported to police by a concerned neighbour.

They allegedly saw her repeatedly luring her friends to a nearby farm where she reportedly teaches them sex acts.

Police say they are investigating claims that someone could have trained the girl and then instructed her to pass on the knowledge.

Ms Wobuyaga said parents should watch out for adults who lure underage children into "illicit relationships".

Victor Odero, Amnesty International's East Africa Campaigner said : "The girl should be immediately and unconditionally released if she is still in detention.

"What she needs is protection and respect for her privacy, rather than being treated as a criminal."
