Uganda has commissioned graduate troops that will man its air space to protect the country's sovereignty. According to a press statement issued Sunday September 11, 2016. President Yoweri Museveni presided over the function in Masindi.
"I commend the army leadership for building independent capabilities on land, water and air. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) was very clear from the beginning. We knew that we had to use scarce resources to build our capabilities. Our ideology is to be self-sufficient at all times," he said.
The President, who is also the commander in Chief of Uganda's armed forces was addressing newly commissioned air-defence troops majority of whom are young science graduates.
Over 60 troops were commissioned at a colorful ceremony attended by the minister of State for Defence Col. Engola Okello and senior army officers.
He commended the army leadership for recruiting young graduates with enough knowledge to protect Uganda's sovereignty.
"Thank you (UPDF) for putting your brains together on this. I congratulate the newly commissioned officers and urge you to learn more. Don't squander your lives and take good care of the equipment," he further explained.
President Museveni urged the army leadership to empower the young troops with more training in order for them to exploit new technology, repair, and maintain security equipment and installations
