{UAH} Kabaka expands mandate of Buganda Land Board

By AL-MAHDI SSENKABIRWA

KAMPALA- Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has expanded the mandate of the Buganda Land Board (BLB) to manage more land that was agreed on in the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between him and President Museveni.

According to Mr Denis Walusimbi, the Mengo information minister, BLB will be in charge of all land which initially belonged to the institution of the Katikiiro of Buganda, but had been taken over by the central government.

The board will further manage land currently occupied by districts, and initially owned by the 18 Buganda counties and 32 square miles which were formerly owned by both the kingdom treasurer (Omuwanika) and chief Judge.

"There is no doubt that this land belongs to the kingdom and since it is under our control now, we shall see how to utilise it and where there are tenants we ask them to cooperate well with the Buganda Land Board," he said while addressing journalists at Bulange -Mengo on Thursday.

Buganda Land Board is the business arm of Buganda which was instated in 1993 to manage part of the assets returned to the Kabaka under the Traditional Rulers Restitution of Assets & Properties Act CAP 247 of the Laws of Uganda. The Kabaka alone owns 350 square miles of land but a big chunk of it is occupied by tenants who have to acquire leases to guarantee their security of tenure.

Other pieces of land to be managed by BLB include; all land occupied by Police in Buganda except CPS ,Katwe and Wandegeya stations and all prisons facilities with the exception of Luzira.
