Ugandan representatives at the ongoing World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan are holding the country's flag high despite departing late for the biennial tournament.

The Uganda National Chess team enjoyed a perfect and notable start to the competition with two straight wins.

After missing three rounds due to delayed travels, the team led by Fide Master [FM] Patrick Kawuma won their first round – round four- with a 3-1 victory over South Asian country, Maldives in the fourth round in the Open section before besting Mauritius.

FMs Harold Wanyama and Kawuma outclassed Mohammed Hasan and Ahmed Ashraf on board two and one respectively while Simon Gonza saw off his fellow Candidate Master [CM] Abdul Rahman Ali on board three to convincingly win round four.

Uganda got the better of Mauritius in the fifth round with a 2½ -1½ victory, with wins for both Kawuma and Wanyama.

Gonza drew against an equally decent player CM Chinasamy Devarajen.

Farouk Fauza, however, lost both rounds.

In the ladies category, Women Fide Masters Grace Kigeni and Goretti Angolikin plus the queen of Katwe, Phiona Mutesi equally did an impressive job.

The ladies beat Honduras 3½ -1½ in the fourth round before recording a hard fought win against Tunisia with the same score.

Uganda is placed 130th in the Open category and 101 in the women's section in the table standings with the 6th round underway.
