Pride Of Oklahoma: Uganda Style
The Pride of Oklahoma is the beloved marching band of the University of Oklahoma.
Darius Katono is a Chemical Engineering senior at OU, and is from Uganda. In 2015, he won a grant from the OU College of Arts and Sciences--Thatcher Hoffman Smith Creativity In Motion Prize. The grant was worth $10,000. Darius used the money to by musical instruments, and start a brass band in his home village of Karera, in the Sheema district of Uganda.
In 2015, The Pride of Oklahoma was outfitted with new uniforms. Connections were made, and in October, 2015, 30 jackets and hats from the "old" Pride uniforms were sent to Darius' group: The Sheema Pride band.
In August, 2016, Kent Vaughn was volunteering in Uganda with his Church. Kent was in the Pride Of Oklahoma from 1972-76. While in Uganda, he heard a band playing, went to investigate, and was extremely surprised to discover the Sheema Pride Band, wearing uniforms with an "OU" on the chest, playing in deepest Africa. He began shooting photos, and we thank Kent for allowing us to use his photos.
Darius has a project to help his home country: Sustainable Creations Uganda. Sustainable Creations currently has three working projects: Classrooms Construction & Improvement, Sewing Workshops and the Sheema Pride Band.
