President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte's bloodthirsty war on drugs has resulted in almost 4,000 deaths during his first 100 days in office.

Now, for the first time, he has revealed his traumatic childhood, which he says 'shaped his character'.

Speaking to Al Jazeera he claims he was 'fondled by a priest' while he was at school in the late 1950s.

According to the Crux, he said: "I was young then and I was afraid of what would happen. How could we complain? We were scared."

Duterte also took the chance to defend his brutal stance on drugs, claiming that he is doing it for the good of the future generation.

"You destroy my country, I'll kill you. And it's a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement.

"I do not care about what the human rights guys say, I have a duty to preserve the generation. If it involves human rights, I don't give a shit."

He also commented on the innocent people caught in the crossfire, claiming they were simply 'collateral damage'.

Despite attracting criticism from the UN, Duterte remains popular with the people of the Philippines.

Around 3,700 people are believed to be dead as a result of the war on drugs. The Daily Mail estimates that 1,377 were killed by police and also that vigilant groups, which Duterte encourages, are responsible for the rest.
