Minister Nakiwala getting Papal blessings

On October 18, the state minister for Youths and Children Affairs made 100 days since her appointment to the office.

To celebrate the milestone, she flew to Rome with a delegation of about 50 Christians from Kampala archdiocese for her annual pilgrimage, but also to thank God for the ministerial appointment.

In her delegation was the chancellor of Kampala archdiocese, Rev Fr Joseph Mary Ssebunya and Papal Knight Tofiri Malookweza who served as the Kabaka's chief for Kyaddondo county at the time Nakiwala served as Buganda kingdom's state minister for Youths and later on for Tourism.

"Being that I am the chief executive officer of the Church's Uganda Martyrs tours and pilgrimage services, I lead pilgrims every year to Rome to renew their faith, but this year's pilgrimage on my part was to also thank God for the appointment to cabinet," Nakiwala told The Observer from the Vatican on October 21.

At the Vatican, Fr Ssebunya led a thanksgiving mass before the group later got the audience of Pope Francis to whom she dedicated her cabinet job. This was after the pontiff's weekly general audience at St Peter's Square on October 19.

"I believe leadership comes from God, and Pope Francis, being St Peter's successor, is also seen as the successor of Jesus; that is why I dedicated my ministerial [job] to him to seek God's guidance," Nakiwala said.

She said she was happy that during her first 100 days, she had been able to visit the majority of Uganda's districts where she has established district youth offices and cooperatives to lead her crusade for the youths to change their mindset for development.

During their brief interaction, the pope repeated his call for the protection of children's rights. He put particular emphasis on children placed on the streets to beg, noting that the vice had denied many children the opportunity to access education or medical care.

He reminded the parents of the time they will have to answer to God for denying their children their right to education and good health in preference to using them as beggars.

The pope gave her a cobalt medal.
