{UAH} REVIEW THE OVER LIBERALISED ECONOMY
October 19, 2016
PRESS STATEMENT:
REVIEW THE OVER LIBERALISED ECONOMY:
1. Last week in our Press Statement, we welcomed the Government's decision to take back the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC). Home-ownership is minimal in urban centers and most people are forced into the rental market. This calls for the construction of affordable housing and use of local contractors as a means to create greater economic activity and investment. The Uganda Peoples Congress calls upon government to initiate a policy where by local content is used in the general infrastructure development. The UPC also calls on government to engage NSSF as a viable partner to invest in this sector to help solve the shelter needs of the citizens of Uganda.
2. For a very long time, there have been austerity-based economic policies imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionalities on the Government of Uganda. The Uganda Peoples Congress calls upon government to look at ways or devise mechanism to mitigate these by planning adequately and therefore ease the low absorption rates for spending currently causing a liquidity crisis in the economy. UPC calls on the government to review its policy as regards macroeconomic policies and adopt a zero tolerance policy on corruption to stamp out the vice as it is the main factor in holding hostage payments to suppliers, pensions etc which have impacted on spending and again liquidity.
3. The Uganda Peoples Congress is pursuing the issue of political engagement that should lead the country to a National Dialogue. Transition is a reality as the current political environment is proving; the country honestly needs to engage on issues affecting us. We need as a country to plan or manage the post-Museveni era, the current state of opposition political parties is not encouraging, as we are still not promoting issues much of the time while spending time on pointless internal fights.
4. Sunday 16th October 2016, was World Food Day and celebrations to mark this day were held in Lira District at the District Farm Institute Ngetta. The theme of the day was "Climate has changed, Food and Agriculture must change too.'' The event was graced by Ugandan Premier, Hon Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the Uganda Peoples Congress delegation was led by the Party President Hon Jimmy Akena. .
The UPC calls upon government to focus on the Maputo /Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) declaration that requires each Government in Africa to at least invest 13% of the GDP on Agriculture. The Maputo Declaration ensures that reasonable resources are made available; capable of increasing agricultural productivity.
5. The Uganda Peoples Congress would like to thank all Party members and the public, who managed to participate in the funeral /burial events of our Mpigi District Chairperson Cde. Edward Sseguya.
