Uganda: Four Medics Arrested Over Negligence

Bukomansimbi — Four medical officers at Kitanda Health Centre III in Bukomansimbi District have been arrested for reportedly neglecting an expectant mother who had gone to the facility to give birth.

The quartet's arrest followed complaints from residents who later petitioned State House Medicines and Health Service Delivery Monitoring Unit to investigate the matter.

"One of the State House officials who had come to attend a function in the district alerted police who later arrested them," said Mr Robert Mugerwa, a concerned resident in Kitanda village on Tuesday.

The health workers reportedly failed to take care of an expectant mother last week and she suffered a stillbirth. The woman was later rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.

Police were called in and the health workers were detained at Kitanda Police Post and later transferred to Bukomansimbi Police Station.

The suspects include the assistant officer in charge of the centre, two midwives and a laboratory attendant. When contacted yesterday, the officer in charge of the hospital, Mr Julius Musibula, declined to comment on the matter, referring this reporter to police.

Residents in the area said health workers at the facility always report late on duty and leave early.

"There are houses at the health centres, but many health workers prefer to sleep in Masaka Town and travel daily to come and work here," complained Ms Christine Nakatudde, a resident of the area.

Some of the expectant mothers who Daily Monitor found outside the maternity ward on Tuesday said many women at the centre who give birth in the night are usually assisted by their fellow expectant mothers and their caretakers because health workers rarely work at night.

Mr John Katotoma, the Bukomansimbi District chief administrative officer, described the health workers' conduct as inappropriate and promised to follow up the case with police.

"It is now a police matter and we cannot get involved as a district now," he said, adding that they will wait until the case is determined by court.

He further warned all civil servants in the district against absenting themselves from work.
