Uganda: Kabamba Attack - Witness Disowns Evidence
Kampala — A prosecution witness has disowned part of the evidence tendered before the Military Court to pin fourteen suspects who are on remand over the failed attack on Kabamba Army Barracks in Mubende District.
They are charged with offences relating to security in connection with the botched attack on Kabamba Army Barracks in Mubende District.
Lance corporal Norman Ssembatya, a staff of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) had earlier told General Court that he recorded proceedings of meetings held by the accused persons in various places round the country. He tendered the said recordings to court.
However, during cross examination, Sembatya disowned some of the recordings saying he only recorded one last meeting out of the 20 he attended with the suspects in Kampala.
His statement contradicted earlier information in which he told court that he recorded all the meetings held by the accused persons.
Sembatya explained: "We met 20 times in Matugga, Mengo and other areas of Kampala discussing on how to source requirements and manpower to be used to rebel against the government, but I only recorded the last meeting because the rest were face to face conversations. I therefore have no other evidence to prove their attendance in those meetings except the suspects, being in the dock and me being here testifying against them."
He added: "There was no writing and audio recording in the meeting because I was even the one directing them and giving them what they could write."
The suspects include; Lt Col Philip Frank Eguma, Capt Hillman Bosco Aleper, formerly of the Armored Warfare Training School in Mubende, Lt Ronald Waibi Mwavu, a junior officer formerly from the 4th Division, Pte Kenneth Sekajja, formerly of Air Defence in Nakasongola and Sgt Ndugga Musaazi Nama.
Others are Mr Marvin Ssemwogerere Mulongo, Mr Nasim Namuzimule, Mr Nduga Musaazi, Rtd Capt John Bosco Rutwama, Mr Ali Mukiibi a retired air force pilot, Mr Lumala Salongo (businessman), Mr Francis Kiwanuka, Herbert Biyimbwa (herbalist), Francis Kaheru Kiwanuka (businessman), Solomon Matovu (businessman), Peter Kibirige (electrician) and Patrick Kibuuka (casual worker).
Case
Prosecution alleges that between February and May 2014, in the various areas of Kampala, Masaka, Wakiso, Luweero and Nairobi-Kenya, Lt Col Eguma, Capt Aleper, Lt Waibi, Pte Sekajja, and others, omitted to disclose vital information about recruitment of people to engage into activities intended to prejudice the security of the defence forces by attacking Armoured Warfare Training School in Mubende District.
Meanwhile court further remanded them until October 17 this year for further hearing
