30 Police Officers Hunt for Guns After Kasese Killings

Police in Kasese has mounted a search operation in the jungles around the place where two of its officers were killed this morning.

Accompanied by police dogs, ten of the officers are deployed at Simba Safari Lodge in Kikorongo, along Katwe road. It is here that unknown people ambushed and killed two police officers and ran away with two guns.
 
Mansur Suwed, the Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, identifies the dead as Danson Tweheyo and Ronald Kalemeera both attached to the Tourism police. He says they were guarding Simpa Safari Camp located in Kikorongo when they were attacked.  The bodies of the two officers have been taken to Kasese Municipal Mortuary.  
 
The police are now looking for the guns which had 38 rounds of ammunition. Earlier in the day, police arrested three suspects who, according to Samuel Odongo, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Commander, will help with investigations. Odongo however declined to to reveal the identities of the suspects.
 
Odongo says the police personnel will not leaving the area until the missing guns are recovered and the assailants found.


He says the attackers are suspected to have used sharp machetes to end the life of the two officers.
 
One of the workers at Simba Safari Lodge told URN on condition of anonymity that the assailants sneaked into the lodge premises at around midnight and their presence was only noticed shortly after they had executed their mission.
 
The source says that efforts to land on the assailants were futile as one of the workers who saw them declined to make alarm for fear of being killed.
 
Accessibility to the lodge has been temporarily halted by police as investigations go on.
 
All the clients who had booked rooms at the lodge have been ordered to leave the place until its declared safe by security operatives.
 
Jackson Blume, a tourist from Germany who has been residing at the campsite for the last one week, told our reporter that he was scared when he learnt of the incident this morning.

Blume says he plans to return to his home country despite not fully ending his tour programme in Uganda.

There have been a series of attacks on police posts in the Rwenzori region in the past four years.

In March this year, shortly after the general elections, there was an attack on Kidodo police post in Kasese town that left six people dead. One of the dead was a police officer identified as Charles Kasimba. The officer's gun was stolen during the attack.

In 2014, six people were killed in Kasese district following an attack on Kasese Cobalt Company Limited-KCCL police post. The attack in Kasese was carried out simultaneously with another one in Bundibugyo town, where Bakonzo youths attacked Kanyamwirima Army Barracks.

In 2012, four people were shot dead in an attack on Muhokya Police station in Kasese district. They were shot after disarming the in-charge of the armoury. This was after they tried to hoist the flag of Rwenzururu Kingdom in Muhokya trading centre.
