{UAH} AMERICAN DEMOCRACY, A CASE STUDY OF 2000 AND 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
TONIGHT ON DREAM AND SAALAAM TVS
Brothers and sisters, durst has started to settle. In my view, our
young republic which only not more than 56 years, is better than USA
which has been around since 1786.
For example, the framers of the American constitution could not
tolerate monarchists after the 13 colonies declared their independence
and many of the monarchists migrated to Canada. l hear that some
immigrants are on their way now migrating to Canada as a result of
Donald Trump's victory.
But according to the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda 1995,
power is divided not only between legislature, executive and
judiciary, but as it were, but also more broadly between traditional
or cultural leaders like Kabaka, abataka, Omukama. Kyabazinga,
Ab'amasaza, Rwot, clan leaders etc…, spiritual leaders like bishops,
qadhis etc… and temporal or political leaders like president,
parliament and judiciary. It is only in Islamic Republic or Iran where
there is a division of power between a Spiritual Leader of the Islamic
Revolution and Council of Clerics on one hand, and President and
Parliament on the other.
But n Uganda it is broader because there is no state religion, and
both monarchists and republicans are accommodated.
Lastly, in his Green Book, the late Col. Muammar El Qadaffi of Libya
criticized party politics be one party dictatorship or multi party
dictatorship as sham and called for popular democracy in form of
popular congresses and people's committees.
While addressing, National Resistance Council in 1990 at International
Conference Center, Qadaffi criticized American system as sham, which
had bored the Americans and hence a low turn out on polling day. He
said that if American democracy was concrete, the looser would have
shared power with the winner and is appointed Vice President. If he
was alive, Qadaffi would have asked for Hilary Clinton to be appointed
Vice President.
President Museveni reacted by saying that no bdy had monopoly on
democracy as the West implied.
For me, any election in form of an electoral college, is sham and real
democracy is direct popular participatory democracy.
What is lacking in Uganda is to have a first presidential run up , to
automatically become an MP and Leader of opposition in Parliament. Had
we been with it, Dr. Kizza Besigye may not have been inciting people
for defiance.
We meet on Dream TV from 7.00 PM to 8.00 PM and Salaam TV from 11.00
pm and 12.00 midnight God willing.
