President Yoweri Museveni has for the first time in almost two years expounded on what compelled him to fire his Prime Minister and close ally, Hon Amama Mbabazi, saying he was "bringing intrigue" in NRM and telling lies about Brig Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Mbabazi was sacked as Premier at a time of high political tensions in the country. The bad blood between Museveni and his ambitious top minister was a public secret.
He was later ejected from the position of NRM Secretary General by the NRM National Delegates Conference.
His position in NRM Central Executive Committee was also taken.
In a space of just three months, the once powerful NRM functionary saw his powers clipped and political status reduced to a mere MP.
Addressing journalists at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, Museveni was asked whether he anticipates a "tight race" with Mbabazi.
The President responded: "Mbabazi has abandoned work. I dismissed him as Prime Minister and Secretary General because he was wasting our time, and he was bringing enkwe (intrigue) in our party."
Museveni further said that Mbabazi's "people would go around claiming that Museveni wants to make his son president."
He added: "My son has never even stood for LCI. They know the Constitution of the country – how somebody can be elected as President. Why was that group going around telling lies?"
The President has consistently said Muhoozi is an army officer concentrating on his military work.
However, reports that Muhoozi is being prepared to succeed his father have refused to go away.

Last year, a group of youth popularized a campaign urging Muhoozi to stand for President.
In a statement, SFC Spokesperson Maj Chris Magezi said "if these youth groups are merely fans of Brig. Muhoozi, then he deeply appreciates their support and feels honored by their confidence in him."
He added: "The youth groups are discussing political issues, which as civilians they are entitled to but Brig. Muhoozi has no intention to enter political activity for the foreseeable future. As he has stated on several occasions when he is no longer a serving soldier in the UPDF he will make his decision about serving his country in other fields."
