A scruffy-looking Australian has been greeted as "Jesus" in Kenya where excited locals welcomed the long-haired, bearded and barefoot traveller as their Lord and saviour.

Former Perth resident Daniel Christos said since he arrived in the Kenyan capital Nairobi he had been followed by adoring crowds with their phones at the ready.

"Every single corner I walk on in Nairobi, I have noticed someone either taking a photo or video," he told Kenya's The Star.

Before he set off on his non-stop trip, Mr Christos said he learnt in his early 20s that office life was not for him.

"It was awful. I was getting grey hairs. I was only 22, stressed, tired and hardly sleeping and drinking like 20 coffees a day," he said during an appearance on Kenyan Television.

"I went travelling and basically never stopped. It was a much nicer way for me to live my life ... I just kept going.
