Uganda: Masindi Hospital Nurses Arrested
Masindi — Police in Masindi are holding two nurses from Masindi hospital over alleged negligence that could have caused the death of Judith Kobusinge four hours after giving birth last Tuesday.
The nurses were arrested on Monday on the orders of the Masindi Resident District Commissioner, Mr Godfrey Nyakahuma.
Mr Ramathan Mukasa, the Kikwana Parish LCII chairman, accused the hospital staff of neglecting patients, especially those who cannot afford to pay money.
The death of Kobusinge created a public outcry in Masindi Town, forcing the Masindi District security committee to convene an impromptu meeting attended by the district chief administrative officer, Mr Mark Tivu, the district police commander, Mr Bosco Bakashaba, the district chairman, Mr Cosmas Byaruhanga, the hospital management committee and health staff.
The meeting chaired by Mr Nyakahuma resolved to institute an investigation, which led to the arrest of the two nurses.
"Whoever was on duty and neglected his or her responsibility is going to answer," he said.
Mother's death
Death. Judith Kobusinge is said to have bled to death about four hours after giving birth at Masindi hospital.

Hospital boss. The Masindi hospital medical superintendent, Dr George Bateganya, said Kobusinge did not die due to negligence.
