{UAH} WALNUT'S LAST WALK
Robert Atuhairwe,
Something remarkable happened here yesterday. Thousands of animal
lovers, including me and my daughter, turned up at the beach in
Cornwall to accompany Wallnut the whippet dog on his last walk.I have
never been so moved emotionally in my life, to witness such a sea of
love and humanity, people turning up from all corners of the UK and
abroad. I even took my own chihuahua Lucky along, even though he does
not like strangers, crowds and unfamiliar sorroundings. It was truly
surreal. Which made me ask myself a question, if human beings are
capable of this incredible love and compassion towards an animal, why
are we so cruel and barbaric towards each other? Why is there so much
unnecessary suffering, oppression and injustice in the world?
I specifically attended Walnut's last walk because I was so moved by
the extraordinary devotion, love and loyalty between him and his
owner, Mark Woods, a union made to last forever. Mark Wood's life in a
sense mirrors my own, He has gone through two failed marriages,
several broken engagements and relationships, but Walnut the dog has
been at his side every minute of his 18 years, never complaining,
forever loyal and devoted. I have only had my Lucky since 2009 when I
got divorced, but nothing would ever seperate me from him. Dogs are
wonderful companions.
Bobby
The heartbroken owner of Walnut has said his final goodbye to his
beloved whippet after having him put to sleep minutes after hundreds
of animal lovers joined him on the beach on the dog's last ever walk.
Mark Woods stole the nation's heart after he appealed for fellow dog
lovers to join him on his last walk with Walnut, the 18-year-old
whippet he has had since a puppy.
Posting on Facebook shortly after the lovable pet had been put down,
Mark described how Walnut 'went very quickly and in my arms', with his
three other whippets in attendance.
Hordes of well-wishers, many accompanied by their own dogs, joined
Mark and his family earlier in the day on a wind swept Porth beach in
Newquay for Walnut's emotional farewell.
Mark carried Walnut across the beach in Cornwall as his health has
deteriorated in old age and he's no longer able to walk.
