{UAH} WOMAN LEARNS SHE DATED A MURDERER

I dated Dale Ogden: Woman leaves B.C. after brief relationship with murderer

She said it was too good to be true, but a British Columbia woman didn't know how right she was.

Good instincts, junior detective work and a story from across the country helped piece together the true identity of the man she was dating.

Fearing repercussions from speaking out, CBC News has agreed not to identify the woman who says she dated convicted killer Dale Ogden in September. Her daughter is speaking on her behalf, after reading about Ogden on CBC.

"From mom's perspective, the first couple of dates he presented himself as the ultimate gentleman," the daughter said, also speaking anonymously.

"[Mom] said she never opened a door, never pulled out her own seat, he offered his coat when it was cold out."

She told her daughter it was "almost like it's too good to be true."

Elaborate excuses

The man identified himself as Edward; a working professional with a new condo, just trying to make a fresh start in Victoria.

The two met on the dating website Plenty of Fish.

After chatting for a while online they met for coffee, took a walk around a local park in his neighbourhood and ended the night at The Keg restaurant. Similar dates followed in the weeks ahead.

Little did she know, he had just been released from prison, having served 16 years for violently killing his wife, Judy Ogden, 25, with the back of an axe — and in front of the couple's four-year-old son.

But as the relationship progressed, the woman became suspicious. Edward didn't want to reveal his last name and made elaborate excuses for his withdrawn behaviour.

Story unravels

"[He] alluded to the fact that maybe his career had to protect his identity," her daughter said. "There was a visit from the Royal Family and he alluded to him being involved in that."

But his story started to unravel when the woman began sharing her suspicions with a friend, who told her there was a halfway house on the same street as the coffee shop where the two first met on a date.

From there, the friend contacted her brother who called the Parole Board of Canada.

Before long, the parole board contacted the woman and questioned her about her relationship with the man she knew as Edward.

She was told he'd been picked up on a parole violation. She was assured she wasn't in danger, but wasn't told what crime he had committed.

According to her daughter, the woman figured he was an online scammer targeting women.

But soon, the daughter says, they pieced together "enough information to uncover a 10-year-old CBC article."

Among the clues was his user name on Plenty of Fish: edwardlogden.

"And that's when we realized that Edward — as he asked to be called — is actually the middle name of Dale Ogden."

High risk for violence

Parole documents say Ogden has "power and control" issues and has been determined to pose a high risk for violence in an intimate relationship.

Due to the nature of his crime, Ogden was paroled on condition to "immediately report all intimate sexual and non-sexual relationships and friendships with females to your parole supervisor."

The woman assumes this is the parole condition Ogden violated.

Scared, she flew to Ottawa last week to be with her daughter, and has had trouble sleeping since learning she was dating a murderer.

"[He] was free to be online and meet my mom on Plenty of Fish," the woman's daughter said, her voice cracking at times.

"She was desperately afraid because she had no sense of how to protect herself from that if he wanted to seek retribution. She knew he was fully aware that it was her phone call that put him in jail."

The parole board spoke to the woman near the end of September. On Sept. 30, Ogden's son Daniel Benoit was notified a warrant had been issued for his father's arrest. But no other details were given.

The woman plans on returning to Victoria, but is fearful of Ogden and the unknown. She contacted Benoit on Friday and shared recent photos of Ogden so he knows what his father looks like today.

"It's a shame because no one should have to live in this much fear of a man who is capable and plead guilty to such a heinous act and is able to walk free."

The Parole Board of Canada told CBC News that, for privacy reasons, it cannot reveal Ogden's current whereabouts.
