A soldier is in police custody in Nakapiripirit Town Council for shooting dead a humanitarian worker attached to Concern Worldwide, an Non-Government Organisation operating in Karamoja region.
Police had to intervene on Tuesday to stop enraged locals who stormed the station to lynch the soldier who is a member of a Local Defense Unit (LDU). Police said they trailed the suspect whom preliminary investigations show was not on duty but had strayed with a colleague's gun, disarmed and arrested him.
The deceased, Matilda Naduk who was the Finance Administrator of the organisation was shot at 11:00pm of Monday when the gunman trailed her maid after an alleged forced intimate relationship failed.
The suspect, Adyaka Mariko, in his late 20s, reportedly exchanged words with the maid after he uttered lustful words to her at a borehole which is near the deceased's home in Loremelup village located within Nakapiripirit Town Council.
The brawl forced the maid to retreat to Naduk's house for fear of harm. The suspect however trailed her and sprayed bullets indiscriminately on people in the house killing Naduk who was rocking her infant baby to sleep. Two other people were injured.
ASP Paul Nangoli, the Nakapiripirit District Police Commander, told URN that the police patrol personnel rushed to the scene after the gunshots and rushed Naduk to Tokora Health Centre where she breathed her last shortly after arrival.
Nangoli disclosed the injured as Poline Teparen and Nachap Zainab both females who were spending a night at Naduk's house. He adds that they are being treated at Tokora Health Centre though their injuries are not life-threatening.
According to Nangoli, a postmortem was carried out from Amudat Hospital. Naduk has been buried today at her ancestral home in Amudat district. The shooting is the second incident in Mt Moroto Region involving soldiers attached to the LDU barracks since May 2015.
Concern Worldwide is operating in ten of the poorest districts in Uganda in the Karamoja, Acholi, and West Nile.
An attempt by URN to get comments from Concern Worldwide was futile as their available telephone contacts.
Naduk went to Kang'ole Girls Senior Secondary in Moroto, St. Mary's College Aboke in Lira and Makerere University
