Mbarara- A section of Mbarara Referral Hospital staff have gone on strike demanding salary arrears amounting to Shs660 million.

The arrears have accumulated since 2004 when they got a salary increment when the hospital was being run by Mbarara University of Science and Technology and the Education ministry.

The hospital later reverted to ministry of Health in 2005. The striking staff are mainly nurses, cleaners and laboratory technicians.

Presenting their petition Mbarara Resident District Commissioner on Tuesday, the workers expressed disappointment with the Finance Ministry which stopped Mbarara University from paying them.

"We have been patient enough since 2014 when this money was released. While the university staff got their money, our effort to get the money has been a nightmare, Ms Rose Dusabe a nursing officer," said.

She told the District Internal Security Officer Mr Robert Namanya, who stood in for the RDC that  they  were registered by the Finance ministry in June before they could be paid  but to date, all that effort has come to naught.

Mr Namanya urged them to return to work as the authorities get into contact with the university officials to chat a way forward.

"I am happy you have demonstrated peacefully, we are going to engage the university staff to chat a way forward," he said.

The Mbarara University Deputy University Secretary Milchoir Byaruhanga acknowledged the plight of the workers.

"We have done our part and only waiting for the permanent secretary to give us a green light to effect payment.

He, however, expressed surprise by the striking workers saying he held a meeting with them and explained the ongoing payment process.
