Mourners angered by social media posts about Agaba - Daily Monitor

SEMBABULE. 

Former Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Director of Physical Planning, George Agaba has been laid to rest in Nabitanga village ,Ntuusi Sub-county,Sembabule District amid criticism from the deceased's friends and relatives over the jubilant messages from many social media users apparently condemning him to his grave.

Mr Brutace Kajingo, a close friend to the deceased, and various mourners who had a chance to speak to the hundreds of their colleagues, condemned the negativity of the posts on different social media platforms and some local newspapers.

"The public, instead of recognising the good work Agaba did, manifest in the beautifying of the city, which I believe was his entire effort as a former physical planner. For us who were his friends know that he did a great job for this country and God is going to thank him for that," a visibly grieved Mr Kajingo said, adding: "It is not us to judge him, but only God."

Mr  Fred Mwesigye, the Nyabushozi area Member of Parliament said it is not good for Ugandans to judge Agaba on social media because whatever he did was a directive from his bosses and asked civil servants to always be determined when doing work.

Agaba, who died upon arrival at Mbarara hospital after getting involved in a motor accident on the Mbarara-Isingiro road last Saturday, had just secured a contract to beautify Mbarara Municipality.

Mr Agaba hit the limelight when he was appointed to the physical planning job at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). He led many operations, some violent, to evict vendors and other city dwellers.

In January 2012, he was accused along his bodyguard, Santos Komakech Makmot, of shooting and killing one person and injuring five others during a KCCA eviction exercise in Luzira,a city suburb . The operation was to demolish "illegal structures which had been erected in the area. Both Agaba and Makmot were later cleared of the murder charges by Nakawa High Court presided by Justice Faith Mwondha. He was later sacked by KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi on corruption allegations.
