Ecweru to Blame Over Famine In Teso – Elwelu

By Milton Emmy Akwam

Maj. Gen. Peter Elwelu, the Commander Land Forces has condemned the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Musa Francis Ecweru for being the reason behind the terrible famine currently in Iteso Sub-region.

The outspoken Elwelu said the Itesot has never been in desperate state as of now because they were very hardworking people and known for food supply to other tribes.

He said because Ecweru is now the Minister in charge giving relief, 'his Teso people' are on the receiving mode other than taking agriculture seriously.

"You can't imagine. It's now Karamoja sub-region supplying us with sorghum and millet as we stay idle and beg from government," Elwelu said.

He revealed this on Tuesday at Achol Pii, Pader district where he had gone to officiate the handover of new 5th Division commander, Brigadier Michael Kabongo.

"Before I go and teach the people of Teso for being idle, I will call Musa Ecweru and tell him that supplying food every time isn't good," he added.

According to Elwelu, many locals and leaders were calling Ecweru for food relief other than educating them on the importance of food security.

One of the district leaders from Soroti town who talked on condition of anonymity blasted Elwelu for what he termed as 'nasty statement' on his natives.

"For him he's doing well with taxpayers' money. We shall not get tired knocking every door for help as famine hit hard," he said on phone on Wednesday.
