Police in Chicago have arrested four people after a teenager with special needs was beaten and tortured live on Facebook.
The victim was bound and gagged as he was kicked and slapped by the suspects.
In highly upsetting footage, the perpetrators can be heard laughing and saying "F*** Donald Trump" as they cut the boy's clothes.
They also cover him in cigarette ashes and use a knife to cut his hair causing his scalp to bleed.
The incident was broadcast online via Facebook Live before eventually being removed.
According to NBC Chicago, the boy's parents were receiving text messages form the perpetrators throughout the ordeal.
Police were alerted and officers eventually found the boy wandering the streets of the West Lexington area of the city on Tuesday afternoon.
He was disorientated and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson called the video a "brutal act" that was "broadcast for the entire world to see" and that the suspects would face "the full weight of the Chicago police department".
He said at a press conference: "Video of a brutal act towards an adult male with mental health challenges made its way onto social media.
"The images in the video put on display the brazenness of the offenders who assaulted the victim and then broadcast it for the entire world to see."
Police commander Kevin Duffin added that the shouts of "f**k Trump" and "f**k white people" heard in the video would form part of their investigation into whether the attack was a hate crime. He said that officers would need to determine "whether or not this is sincere or just stupid ranting and raving".
It is believed the victim, aged 18 and mentally handicapped, knew one of the attackers and initially went with them willingly.
He had been with the group for 24 hours, police believe.
Asked if the attack was politically motivated, Supt Johnson said "at this point we don't have anything concrete to point in that direction."
Four people have been arrested and were being interviewed last night.
