Russians Want Tillerson To Return His Medal
Thousands of Russians took to social media to express their outrage over Tillerson's remarks regarding Russia
Russian social media exploded on Wednesday after listening to former Exxon CEO and chairman Rex Tillerson speak at his confirmation hearing to be the next Secretary of State in not-so-flattering terms regarding the Kremlin and Russia's international ambitions.
As Tillerson, whom many in Russia had believed to be pro-Kremlin, declared that Moscow and Washington were "unlikely to ever be friends," Russians online demanded Tillerson return the Order of Friendship he was awarded by President Vladimir Putin in 2013.
"A stab in the back," was how some put it in comments on Vkontakte, the Russian version of Facebook. Others argued he was not the fresh start Moscow was hoping for but rather "a new John McCain," referring to the veteran senator from Arizona who has been a vocal critic of Russia's political and military aspirations.
In response to various questions on Russian behavior, Tillerson said that the response to the annexation of Crimea should have been stronger, and that had he been in government, he would have provided Ukraine with more weapons and supported Ukraine's military with U.S. air surveillance. "I think the Russian leadership would have understood that more powerful response and message that after Crimea, their aggression stops here," Tillerson said. "Instead, I think Russians judged our response to be weak."

Others however, believed the former Exxon chief was playing to his audience and saying what he had to to get his nomination approved. They insisted his pro-Russian stance was intact.
@InfoResist иначе в сенате не утвердят…говорит то, что те хотят услышать. Зато орден русский на груди))

Tillerson's past dealings with Russia as head of Exxon had sparked optimism among Russians when news of his nomination emerged, hoping he would be part of a friendlier U.S. administration after President Obama leaves the White House.
