{UAH} Trump administration is set to announce restrictions on refugees entering the United States
The Trump administration is set to announce restrictions on refugees entering the United States and restrictions on visas to citizens coming from countries that include war-prone countries like Libya, Yemen, Sudan Syria, Iraq and Iran. On the surface this will draw strong support from many Americans who believe these measures will make them safer. But the measures may be grounded more in politics than in actual facts. Consider this: Iran is not a war prone country and regardless of what your opinions are about its politics and policies, Iran is not a lawless or war-ravaged country. Clearly the motivation to ban Iranian citizens from travel to the US seems to be more politically motivated and perhaps even more punitive than based in legitimate security concerns.
Even if you look at the past 8 years of terror attacks on American soil under the Obama administration, the majority of those major attacks were carried out by American citizens (like the Fort Hood shooter), naturalized or by birth, some were converts , many were self-radicalized, others were immigrants from countries who are not on the travel ban list.
For example, Tashfeen Malik, the San Bernardino shooter was from Saudi Arabia/Pakistan. Neither one of those two countries is on the Trump administration list of restricted countries. Consider Omar Mateen, the Orlando night club shooter, he was born in New York. But his family is from Afghanistan...another war-ravaged country that is not on the travel ban list. Even the Boston Marathon bombers, the Tsarnev brothers were of Russian/Krygyz decent, two countries also not on the list.
So if we are surveying the list of countries who are producing terrorists that are actually attacking us or inspiring attacks against us then why are we not banning the ones behind the terrorism and its ideology?
It may feel good to think by keeping people out of USA, Americans are making ourselves safer, but the truth of the matter is much more complex. Terrorism is transmitted across borders not with people but with ideas. You can ban people from stepping foot into the US. But can you ban an idea from taking root in people already here? The question subsequent American administrations are struggling to ask is what can we do to combat the ideology of terrorism. That's the debate our society needs to have. They can start by not dropping bombs on 7 different Muslim countries.US has been bombing all these countries and destabilizing the region and then have the indecency to refuse refugees. This is disgusting.
And I believe at the end of the day, this kind of social posturing for politics or functional 'safety' is a very wrong mistake. And in the end, only alienates the West even more, allowing the tiny percentage of 'bad guys' to fuel the fire of 'us vs them' to a whole new level.
