{UAH} Fw: Opio Denis - Dies

Dear All,

I am sad to inform you about  the death of the young lad Denis Opio,  who passed  away just a few minutes ago at Lacor Hospital in Gulu, in Uganda. We had managed to remove him from his village in Iceme,  Apac district  and got him admitted to Lacor Hospital where he has been in critical care for the past two weeks. We had intended to send Denis to Nairobi or India, but the process is so slow and cumbersome as you can see from the email communication below. Just now, I have been frantically trying to get an ambulance to take him to Kampala, and also to get  Mulago Hospital to process his referral to an Indian Hospital when I got the devastating news he had passed away.

It is very disheartening news, and I can't stop crying. The only positive thing to take from this tragedy is that I tried my best to save a child, and will do so again and again so long as I am in  a position to extend a hand of friendship to those who need  it.

I thank all those who supported Denis and his family  in their hour of need.

In Grief,

George Okello

Dear George,

I have just received information from Lacor that Denis unfortunately breathed his last a few minutes ago. I am trying to get the doctor to confirm this and revert to you.

Thanks.

Eunice.

Subject: Fw: Opio Denis-Condition

Hi George,

A cousin of mine (Daphne) who works in Gulu just sent be a brief below about Denis. Hopefully he stabilises soon so he can be referred to the heart institute in Mulago. Thanks. E.

Dear Eunice,

I managed to visit the patient Opio Denis at Lacor hospital as requested by you, I met with the doctors and the consultant seeing him and they told me that:

  1. The child currently has an infection which they are still treating and therefore he cannot be moved.
  2. That the child has to see a heart specialist from the Heart institute in Kampala as soon as the infection is treated  for another check up to determine what kind of surgery will be appropriate for him.
  3. The doctor also said that the surgery should be done as soon as possible because the child's condition is delicate.
  4. In the meantime he advised that we can start the process of arranging for his transport means like a private ambulance to transport the child to the heart institute in Kampala.
  5. He also recommended some countries like South Africa and India where the surgery can be done.
  6. The doctor is also having an ongoing conversation with the Heart institute in Kampala to see how best to help this child since any referrals for surgery or treatment abroad has to be made by Mulago National referral Hospital only.

For purposes of direct contact or more information, this is the contact of the Doctor and a consultant seeing the child

Dr Kayanja Adrian
