{UAH} FDC to drag tycoon Ham Kiggundu to court over Park Yard

Uganda's biggest opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has threatened to take city businessman, Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, to court.

TO BE SUED: City Tycoon Hamis Kiggundu

Speaking to journalists at the weekly briefing held Monday at their party headquarters in Najjanakumbi, the party's spokesman Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said they were taking Kiggundu to court over illegal eviction and demolition of Nakivubo Stadium.

He was reacting to last week's eviction of traders from Park Yard Market and sealing off of Nakivubo stadium. The market was recognised by both the Nakivubo Board of Trustees and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

"Nakivubo is a national property that was put in place by an Act of Parliament and in case it was to undergo redevelopment, the right developer is the government, henceforth as the party, we have to guard the properties of the country," Semujju said.

To support FDC's stand on the development of Nakivubo, he gave an example of Shimoni land as part of government land that had been given to private developers only for the land to end up being misused.

Meanwhile, Ham came out at the weekend and defended the eviction of the traders, saying that he demolished the temporary structures at Park Yard 'to construct a modernised parking' that he said would be ready next year.

"I have got all the necessary requirements to redevelop Nakivubo stadium. I am ready to take on anybody who isn't satisfied with my contract. All those parties that are not contented should seek court redress because I am doing this in line with the law. We discussed it with the vendors and they accepted to vacate the land," he was quoted by the media as saying.

Apparently, Kiggundu says he plans to build a 930-vehicle capacity parking lot with 670 slots for open parking and another 260 slots for under building parking.

In a related, Mr Kiggundu has refuted claims by Butambala MP Muwanga Kivumbi that he is acting as proxy foir trhe First Family
