{UAH} Kampala Needs over 30,000 CCTV Cameras
Following the directive of President Museveni to install CCTV cameras in Kampala and other major towns, KCCA has revealed that Kampala city alone needs over 30,000 cameras.
"In terms of cost it is quite big it could be a little over $100million," said Dr Steven Ntambi, an engineer at Kampala Capital City Authority.
He further said that Government is already in contact with Chinese company to procure over 30,000 cameras in the city.
Museveni's statement in reaction to Friday's murder of top police officer Assistant Inspector General of Uganda Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi, he said that its time for government to install the Cameras.
"We have been planning to do this project for some time but we have been postponing it on account of other priorities like the roads and electricity. Since, however, these thugs think they can use this remaining gap in our otherwise robust security frame-work, I have decided and directed the Minister of Finance to work with Police to immediately close this gap," said Museveni in the statement.
This website understands that in 2007, ahead of CHOGM summit, modern closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed Entebbe and Kampala by Sekanyolya Systems Limited.
Our investigators have since found out that most cameras were stolen and the remaining ones are non-functional.
In 2013, President Museveni also hinted on government procuring CCTV cameras for Kampala and major towns in the country.
