KAMPALA. City businessman Andrew Kananura alias Desh yesterday blamed the police for not acting in time to save his former worker's life as he began his defence against charges of murdering Badru Kateregga.
The deceased was beaten to death at Desh's bar in Naguru on September 30, 2012. Desh is jointly charged with his brother Raymond Kananura, Cyrus Maganda, Samuel Muzolewa and Jacob Onyango.

Desh told court that in the wee hours of the fateful night, he received calls from his security officers Charles and Robert at his Panamera Bar, saying someone had come in from the back of the bar and had injuries.
"…I had just settled in Naguru for three months, I tried to trace for an ambulance but I failed. Then, I told Charles to try to maintain the patient until morning when he would receive medical assistance," Desh testified.
He said Charles called him again stating that the injured person was dying. "I remember calling the police four times and they assured me that they were going to pick him. I told them that possibly, if they drove him in an ambulance he would survive. After, I called my friend, Mr Geoffrey Nagumya, who also happens to be my lawyer, and we proceeded to Panamera Bar. At that time we found when police had arrived but Charles and Robert had fled the scene," he said.
Desh said they moved around the premises with police and spotted a man lying somewhere.

"I saw this man was still moving, a sign that he was still alive, I tried to insist that police drives him in an ambulance to hospital but they refused asserting that he appeared dead," Desh told court. He disputed the prosecution submission that he beat up his employee to death.
"I strongly refute the allegations that I murdered my boy, Kateregga. I can never do such, I believe he fought with fellow workers and other men from across the drainage closer to the bar over money matters and that might have led to his death," Desh said. He also told court that he had more than 53 employees at the time Kateregga died and he did not personally know the deceased as he was employed while Desh was on a trip in the Middle East.
His brother Raymond Kananura, in defence, echoed Desh's testimony that on the fateful morning, they witnessed Kateregga still alive as he was making a glutting sound. However, he said, the police was reluctant to rush him to the hospital.

Denied accusations
Raymond Kananura also denied participating in the murder. He said at the entrance of the bar and in the car parking lot, there were about 13 police officers on guard and would have witnessed the murder.
He told court that the deceased was found with Shs300,000 hidden in his underpants upon being searched by the bouncers (bar guards), contrary to Shs30,000 as earlier stated by most prosecution witnesses.
He said since Kateregga was not in cash collection, he was questioned on how he got the money and he revealed that he was keeping it for his co-worker, one Kenneth Kirenzi.
He further testified that Kirenzi too was searched and found with a bank statement, which had more than Shs8m, which he had been often banking on Sundays or Mondays after work.
He confided in them that he always stole money from the bar and was willing to refund it. Other suspects Maganda, Muzolewa and Onyango also testified denying participating in the murder.
