Kampala: Police has arrested several Democratic Party (DP) members including Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze over her planned meeting at Nsambya Sharing Hall in Kampala.
Other people arrested included Kampala Central councillor, Mr Moses Katabu and three other members of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) ; Andrew Mugonza, Charles Waswa and Robison Kijjambu.

They were arrested by police as they tried to force their way into Nsambya Sharing Hall where Ms Nambooze was scheduled to hold a consultative meeting with a section of DP members from Buganda sub-region.

They were bundled on a waiting police pickup and taken to Kabalagala Police Station.
Addressing journalists this morning amid tight security at the venue, the regional police commander, Mr Geoffrey Kaheebwa said Ms Nambooze's request to hold the meeting was not accepted because she did not follow her party processes as required by the law.

Early this month, Ms Nambooze who also doubles as the Buganda region DP vice president, vowed to go on with her planned conference.
This followed a directive by the party president, Mr Nobert Mao stopping Ms Nambooze from holding the meeting, saying it was contrary to the party constitution.
In letter dated March 20, 2017 to Ms Nambooze, Mr Mao said the party laws give him powers to ensure that party officials perform their duties efficiently, but in accordance with the party constitution and policies.

According to Mr Mao, the purported meeting is being convened contrary to the party constitution and a standing resolution of the National Executive Meeting (NEC), which requires regional leaders to coordinate their programmes with NEC and get prior approval.
However, Ms Nambooze told journalists that Buganda is her jurisdiction and does not need to get approval to do her work from Mao or NEC.
Ms Nambooze's meeting is being organized under the theme; "Making DP Great Again".
