Sikh men are consistently the primary victims of Islamophobia. After 9/11, and still again today.
On one hand, their disproportionate targeting illustrates the absurdity of Islamophobia - namely, driving people to hate and then attack a caricatured understanding of a religion and it's adherents, not Islam and Muslims specifically.
Which, on the other, highlights that a large number of Islamophobia's victims are in fact non-Muslims, like Sikhs, Arab Christians, Hindus, East African non-Muslims, and so on. Therefore, since Islamophobia shapes a distorted (and racialized) understanding of Islam and Muslims, it should be understood as both a system of racial and religious animus.
This should move us to frame Islamophobia as not simply a system that exclusively impacts Muslims, but a far broader myriad of people.
