For 25% of kids this is their first book. That's a terrible indictment on the parents of this country. Nothing to do with schools or the education system, and as has been said in the comments below the article, charity shops have kids books for 10p No one will convince me that 25% of parents haven't got 10p now and again. Maybe some haven't but not a quarter of all parents. It's just laziness and probably down to the fact that a computer game doesn't require any participation from the parent pre bedtime.

Survey shows that 25% of eight to 11-year-olds used the tokens given away for the annual celebration of reading to buy their first book

today is world book day - if you register online, there are lots of offers and events for children - i am all for children reading more and spending less time on the computer - though i do see that even publishers have had to move into more interactive studies for children. but how lovely it is to read to a young child just before they go to sleep - it was robert's highlight of the day, and now its all over - as soon as they reach 9 0r 10, they dont allow you that privilege.
