BORIS JOHNSON has formally apologised to a Saudi official after an egg was thrown at him while on a trip to London.

Last week an anti-war activist tried to perform a citizens' arrest on General Ahmed Asiri a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, and another egged him in the back.

The General came to London last week and addressed concerns about Saudi involvement about the war in Yemen

But the Foreign Secretary has made a phone call to officially apologise.

He rang Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, son of the Saudi King and the country's defence minister, to try and make amends.

Mr Johnson said sorry for the protesters' "attack" after General Asiri said he had been "subject to aggression" by people critical of their operations in Yemen.

Anti-war activist Sam Walton approached him before playing his hand on the General's shoulder.

He then said: "I'm placing you under citizen's arrest for war crimes in Yemen."

And another followed him to the entrance to a building where he threw an egg – which hit the General in the back.

Video showed General Asiri turning around and giving him the finger.

A number of groups have slammed Saudi Arabia for their involvement in the civil war in Yemen.

More than 10,000 have been killed and many more are starving in the war-stricken country. Three million are thought to have been displaced.

In March 2015 a Saudi-backed coalition intervened against Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran.

Tory MP Andrew Mitchell this week urged the UK Government to stop supporting the Saudi-regime - to which it sells arms.

But General Asiri accused him of relying on one-sided propaganda to inform his views.
