A passenger on a flight from the U.K. to New York made an unlikely discovery in the plane’s bathroom — a loaded handgun a federal air marshal accidentally left behind, officials said Saturday.
The stunned passenger gave the weapon, found by the toilet, to a crew member on the Delta flight from Manchester as it was about to land at Kennedy Airport on April 6.
The crewmember returned the weapon to the marshal. The airline reported the incident to the marshal’s supervisor days later, according to CNN.
The air marshal hasn’t been fired, officials said. Her name was not immediately released.
Sources told CNN she was a new hire who should have been paired with a more seasoned air marshal.
Air marshals have been protecting commuters since the 1960s. The marshals were folded into the Transportation Security Administration after 9/11.
“We take all reports of misconduct seriously and are reviewing the circumstances of this incident,” Transportation Security Administration spokesman Mark Howell said.
“TSA takes prompt and appropriate action when allegations of misconduct are substantiated."
