Members of Parliament on the Foreign Affairs Committee have appealed to government to do everything possible, to acquire prime land offered in Washington for the relocation of Uganda's Mission in the US.
The call was made as the committee met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Sam Kuteesa who was presenting a response to the issues raised by members on the Ministry's policy statement for the Financial Year 2017/2018.
Members were told by the minister that Uganda risks losing land in various capitals around the world, with the expiration of lease periods, given that many Missions' funds for rehabilitation of and construction of new buildings have not been provided for.
The US government, the Minister revealed, offered land in Washington to Uganda and other Embassies in efforts to have all embassies located in one section of the Capital.
"Due to the changes that were communicated to us by USA of having all missions in one gazetted place in Washington, we were offered land worth 5Million Dollars, but we have no funds," Kuteesa told the committee.
Kuteesa says that with no funds in place, Uganda's option would be to construct on rented land as has been done with the Brussels Embassy.
The Minister further revealed that some of the prime land that Uganda is at risk of losing elsewhere include; Abuja (8960 Square Meters), Brussels (5000SM), Dar es Salaam (4221SM) and Juba (1200 SM).
Mbale Municipality MP, Jack Wamai during the meeting said Uganda needs to move faster and acquire the land in Washington, when there is still room.
