Ugandan arrested in Zambia with $79,000 fake dollars

  • Written by ABUBAKER MAYEMBA

A 33-year-old Ugandan has been arrested in Lusaka, Zambia after he was found in possession of $79,500 (about Shs 287m) counterfeit notes.

According to reports in Zambia, Isa Mutebi was picked on Wednesday by the country's Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers from a shopping mall in Lusaka where he operated his businesses.

It's alleged that the suspect, living in Kamwala, was found with $79,500 of fake dollars. Theresa Katongo, the DEC public relations officer, confirmed the arrest and added that several other people had been arrested with similar cases.

She further asserted that the commission had intensified the fight against crime and had arrested 20 small-scale farmers for unlawful cultivation and trafficking of cannabis.

It is said that many Ugandans in Zambia opt for dubious jobs to source for a livelihood but because of the strictness of authorities in the southern African state, many have been apprehended.

In 2015 alone, 12 Ugandans were arrested in Zambia for pretending to possess healing powers yet they had none. Just like they do back home, the Ugandan traditional healers abroad had gathered a following through radio and television adverts.

Authorities intervened after many people complained that the traditional healers were quacks. It was not hard for police to trace them since they used the same phone numbers they would give in the adverts.
