Islamophobia in France is more intense and unhinged.
It is facilitated by the lack of no formal separation of church and state, and the country's strict adherence to secularism (laicite), which enables the state to enact policies that blatantly violate the religious rights of Jews, Sikhs, and most acutely, Muslims.
Like American Islamophobia, French Islamophobia is inflicted by the state and private actors. But the lack of Free Exercise of Religion and Establishment safeguards make French Muslims more vulnerable. Enabling policies such as:
- The 2004 Headscarf Ban
- The 2010 Face Covering Ban
- Hardline counter-radicalization policing
- A Prison Population in France that is 60-70% Muslim.
All of this, unfortunately, would have been far worse if Marine Le Pen - who capitalizes on Islamophobia as a full-fledged campaign strategy (a la Trump) - was elected President.
