{UAH} Gen Kayihura Suspends 4 Senior Police Officers Over Jinja Land Scandal

testifying before the commission

Gen Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police last evening suspended four senior police officers who are implicated in the land conflict in Jinja.

The four are:

ACP Julius Twinomujuni from the Directorate of Human Rights and Legal Services

SSP Edgar Nyambogo, the Regiaonl Police Commander of Kidepo

SSP Felix Mugizi, the DPC of Kumi and

SSP Apollo Kateeba the RPC Rwenzori.

These are now under police investigation, for mismanagement of a case where a private company illegally evicted traders working in a government owned structure in Jinja Town.

The property, which was being claimed (with fake documents) by businessman Simpson Birungi of Birus Properties was demolished on the watch of the police officers after the tenants were forcefully evicted.

The IGP was yesterday advised by the Land Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire to probe the implicated officers within two weeks.

He however, insisted on starting the probe right away, saying there was no need to wait.

"We could start right now; I have my team which is led by the DIGP. They can start right away," he said.

In the suspension letter, Kayihura said the officer's leave takes immediate effect, pending the findings of both the Land Commission investigations and those of the police special committee which he appointed to look into the matter.

The Police probe committee will be supervised by Kayihura's deputy Okoth Ochola.

The officers however, claim to have obtained instructions to issue the eviction notice to the tenants, from the deceased former Director of Police Operations AIGP Felix Kaweesi.

ACP Julius Twinomujuni claimed while appearing before the Lands Commission yesterday that he attempted to advise Mr Kaweesi that there was a court order against involvement  in the said property but he was ignored.

These however, were reprimanded by the commission for using the fallen police officer as a scapegoat for their crimes.

The Commission boss also suggested that the four are formerly charged by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions
