Human waste flows freely in Kampala, leaving city stinking to high heaven

I don't know how to say this, but I must say it. Even if I don't, you will smell it when you come to Kampala. In Uganda, we are degenerating into a filthy society and the despicable trend is being spearheaded by the elite.
What do you call the waste product of the human digestive system? Here we have several nicknames for it because we can't even bring ourselves to pronounce it. Whatever you call it, Ugandans seem to have fallen in love with human waste.
So much so that instead of disposing it fast or making good use of it like using it to produce power like in the west, they are keeping it in its stinking, untreated form as near to themselves as possible and then dispose it anyhow when the rain comes.
When I first visited one of the coastal cities on the Indian Ocean years ago, I was appalled to see latrines built high above the ground with a padlock at the bottom, and to learn that the reason for the design and the padlock was to enable the owner to open for the stuff to flow out when it rained.
I was told the system was called 'tapisha' which meant something like making the latrine throw up the contents of its bowels, which came from the bowels of man.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find when I visited the same city recently that the "high-rise" latrines have disappeared as a proper sewerage network now covers most of that city and the residents no longer need to 'tapisha' into the rain runoff water, which used to make cholera outbreaks a must whenever it rained.
But my Kampala, which used to be so nicely covered by proper sewerage when we were growing up in the eighties is now adopting the stupid 'tapisha' system. Last week, we saw on television an institution that should be the very last to wilfully spread disease through filth do exactly that.
It is called Kiruddu Hospital in the important southern administrative division of Kampala called Makindye.
Over the last one year or so, Kiruddu has been serving as the national referral hospital for the country because the famous Mulago Hospital was undergoing renovation.
It is this Kiruddu that has openly spearheaded the 'tapisha' method of spreading disease, stench and filth in Kampala. I am saying "openly" because other elite institutions including lakeside hotels and a private university also in Makindye division have been 'tapishering' secretly.
Now as if pumping human bowel contents into the open is not bad enough, Kiruddu hospital is pumping contents of bowels of sick people!
Even the usually docile Ugandans who take a lot of er... bowel contents, this time have said NO. So, the residents of Makindye division held a demonstration and demanded that Kiruddu hospital be closed.
But then police came in as expected, dispersed the demonstrators, arrested a few 'ring-leaders' and the matter ended there. Next time you come to Kampala, get yourself a face mask for your nose first. Don't say I didn't warn you. In the meantime, How I wish we stopped wasting this garbage and made good use of it.
